Questions, answered.

Booking a room, what it costs, your first weeks in Germany and how hosting works. If your question isn’t here, write to us and a person will reply.

Booking

How do I find a room?
Pick a city, your arrival and departure dates, a nightly budget, the room types you’d take and the languages you’d like your host to speak. We show you rooms that fit, ranked by price, language and how well the host is rated.
What happens after I send a booking request?
The host looks at your profile and accepts or declines. Once they accept, you get the address, directions from the airport or station, your check-in time, the host’s contact details and the booking terms in writing.
Can I message a host before booking?
Hosts can message you about your request before they accept. Phone numbers and email addresses are only shared once the booking is agreed, so keep the conversation on Staywala until then.
What kinds of rooms are there?
Shared rooms, private rooms, rooms in a host’s home, sublets and roommate-wanted listings. Each listing says which type it is, the price per night and the dates it’s free.
What about cancellations?
Each host sets a cancellation policy, and it’s written into your booking terms before you confirm. Read it on the booking summary so you know where you stand.

Payments and fees

What does Staywala cost me as a guest?
A flat €1 per booking, whether the room is €20 or €200 a night. During our launch it’s free.
How do I pay the rent?
You pay your host directly, outside Staywala, in the way you agree with them. We take 0% commission on rent.
Why is rent paid off the platform?
Keeping rent between you and your host means there’s no percentage added on top. The €1 booking fee is the only thing Staywala charges guests.
What do hosts pay?
A one-off €5 when they start hosting, also free during our launch. There’s no monthly fee and no cut of the rent.

Arrival

How does the Anmeldung work?
Your booking unlocks a step-by-step guide to registering your address (Anmeldung) in English and Hindi. You’ll need a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, the landlord’s confirmation that you live there, and your host fills it in for you.
Can I open a bank account before I’ve registered?
Some student-friendly banks let you open an account before your Anmeldung. The checklist in your arrival guide lists them and explains how blocked accounts work for your visa.
What is the Deutschlandticket?
The Deutschlandticket gives you unlimited regional transport across Germany for one monthly price. Your arrival guide explains where to buy it and whether your Semesterticket already covers it.
What else is in the arrival guide?
Nearby groceries, pharmacies, clinics and ATMs with walking times from your room, food under €10, your nearest stops and lines, shops, and things to do indoors and out.

Trust and safety

Are listings verified?
Yes. A person on our team checks every listing’s photos, address and local rules before it goes live. Nothing is published automatically.
When are my contact details shared?
Only once you and the host have agreed the booking. Until then your phone number and email stay private.
How do reviews work?
Guests review hosts and hosts review guests, and only after a real stay, so every review comes from someone who was there.
Something doesn’t feel right. What should I do?
Don’t send money or personal documents before a booking is agreed on Staywala. Write to us at info@staywala.eu and tell us which listing or message it’s about.

Hosting

What do I need to list a room?
At least five photos, the room details, your price per night, the dates it’s free, a short bio and the languages you speak.
How long does verification take?
Your listing shows as Pending verification while a person on our team checks it, then Verified, then Live. We’ll let you know as soon as it’s live.
How do I get paid?
Your guest pays rent to you directly, in the way you both agree. Staywala takes 0% commission.
Do I have to accept every request?
No. You see each guest’s name, arrival date, stay length and message, can ask questions, and then accept or decline.
